4 Types Of Motors Used In Industrial Manipulators

An industrial manipulator is a kind of machine developed specifically for industrial applications such as welding and material handling, etc. Choosing an ideal motor for your industrial robot is always a tough task while designing the robot especially for industries. Here the major four types of motors are introduced to help you know better about the motor selection.

1. AC motor
An AC motor can be divided into asynchronous motor and synchronous motor. For example, an induction AC motor is an asynchronous type device that consists primarily of a wire-wound stator and rotor. The power supply is connected to the wire and the AC current flowing through the wire induces an electromagnetic field on the coiled wire, which is a strong field that can provide power for the rotor motion. Synchronous motors are constant speed motors that operate synchronously with the AC line frequency and are typically used where accurate constant speed is required.

2. DC motor
DC motors are often used in industrial manipulator and other many industrial applications, because the DC motors are easy to control the speed and direction, and can withstand a wide range of speed from full speed to zero. Characterized by high torque-to-inertia ratio, DC motors can respond quickly to changes in control signals.

3. Servo motor
A servo motor is used in the closed-loop system with digital controller. The controller sends speed commands to the drive amplifier, which in turn supplies power to the servo motor. Some form of feedback device, such as a resolver or encoder, provides information about the position and speed of the servo motor. The resolver or encoder can be integrated with the motor or located at a remote location.

4. Stepper motor
The stepper motor can be operated with or without feedback, and the rotation of the motor is broken up into small angular steps. It is controlled by a pulse command signal and can stop exactly at the command point without any brake or clutch assembly. When power is lost, the PM stepper motor usually remains in its last position.
